HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV)

HOW YOU GET IT: Skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

SYMPTOMS: HPV is a virus (with more than 100 strains), some of which can cause abnormal cell growth in the cervix and even, in some cases, cancer. Other strains are more likely to cause genital warts. For girls, the warts are on or near the vulva, vagina, cervix, or anus. In guys, they are on or near the penis, scrotum, or anus. Warts can be any size, are usually whitish or flesh-colored, and are sometimes hard to see. You can also be infected with HPV and not have genital warts; in this case, it is still possible to pass the virus along to someone else.

TESTS: Swab test of the cervix for women (also known as a Pap smear). There is not a test for men.

TREATMENT: Usually the body will cure the infection in one or two years, but for those who get secondary medical problems such as warts and cancer, those things have to be treated more aggressively. There is a fairly new vaccination recommended for people between the ages of nine and 26 that is effective at preventing certain strains of the virus, so do ask your doctor about this. Previously this vaccination was only available for females, but now it is available for everyone.
